Redmi 6A Review: Value for Your Money!
      by mitch002

Xiaomi has unveiled 2 budget series side by side, the Redmi 6 and the Redmi 6A. This review we take you to the successor of the popular budget series the Redmi 5A. The Redmi 6A has probably copied itself from its older sibling and the one thing that didnt carry over was the SoC, Xiaomi has ditched the Snapdragon 4 series and replaced it with the MTK Helio A22 which is a way to keep the price low at this point.

      Design

The Redmi 6A is definitely a twin of the Redmi 6 and its an upgrade from the Redmi 5A in some aspect, one thing for sure is that the price maintained the same from its predecessor which is a good news for fans of this series. The screen became bigger from 5 inch to 5.45 inch while maintaining its physical size. This phone is pretty light on the pocket be it physically or financially.

The Redmi 6A is pretty similar to the Redmi 6, its almost an identical twin

      Unboxing Video:

      Mediatek Helio A22

Mediatek is back in business, its been a while since Redmi Note 4 that we seen the last of the MTK SoC inside a Redmi Series phone, MTK is better known for its affordability rather than for its performance. But this time they came back with a 12nm architecture chip and its said to be more efficient than ever. We were surprise with the performance as we did several test on it especially on multitasking and it went pretty well without any problem. AnTuTu gave it a pretty good score at 62306 points which was a bump up from the SD 425 on the Redmi 5A. We didnt bother to run heavy graphic games on this one as it will definitely not survive it, but light games and online games did work without a problem.

      Connectivity

The Redmi 6A supports 12 different LTE bands, it's easy to switch to LTE network inside the settings but once your do the second sim will be running on GSM connectivity only. You can freely choose which sim you want to use your LTE data. We have experienced no problem surfing using LTE or 3G in our home country in the Philippines as well as dual standby mode is working seamlessly. Wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac is also smooth and it also supports Wi-Fi Direct. Wireless screen mirroring is also available via the Miracast protocol, tethering data is also working perfectly. Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, and GLONASS are all present and working pretty good. We also have a smooth navigation using Google Maps as it is pretty much accurate in pointing our current location.

      Detailed Network Band

      GSM (Band B2/3/5/8)
      CDMA1X / EVDO (Band BC0)
      WCDMA (B1/2/5/8)
      TD-SCDMA (Band B34/39)
      TDD-LTE (Band B34/B38/ 39/40/41(100MHz))
      FDD-LTE (Band B1/3/5/7/8)

      Audio and Video

      • MP4
      • FLV
      • PCM
      • XVID
      • AAC
      • MP3
      • AMR
      • FLAC

Supports H.263, H.264 AVC Baseline Profile (BP), H.264 AVC Main Profile (MP), MPEG-4 SP and other video formats supporting PCM, AAC/AAC+, MP3, AMR-NB and WB, Opus, PCM /WAVE, Vorbis and other audio formats

We played some music and ran some movies on this unit, the screen display is good, this is definitely a bigger screen display compared to its predecessor the Redmi 5A, the loudspeaker is almost similar to that of the Redmi 5A has to offer.

      Camera

One of the main highlight for every smartphone release is its camera, people will ask whats the improvement on the camera. Everyone loves to take photos, especially selfies. The camera sensors is the Omnivision OV13855 coupled with a front lens using a Samsung S5k5e8.

The camera takes good photos in daylight and in low light areas it is not good as I had a hard time taking in good ones on dark areas. But for a budget series like this, the camera is already amazing for its shots.

      Battery Performance

We were able to achieve a good battery rating for this unit since, we lasted a day on normal usage without hitting the charging port or power bank. PC Mark Battery Stress Test gave it a rating of 11 Hours and 29 Minutes. We charged the phone from 15% to 100% using a QC 3.0 Charger supplied from the Mi 8, it took us 2 hours and 41 minutes just to get the job done, crazy isnt it?

      Other Benchmarks

      Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A

      Conclusion

The Redmi 6A is definitely a good phone to have considering the amount of money that you need to shell out, for 599 RMB you already have yourself a good decent camera, a good decent processor to complete the daily task that you throw at it as well as a decent screen size at 5.45 inch. There is nothing to go wrong with this unit and its a good secondary backup phone to have as well.
