      We Review the Redmi 4X!

While we were at it busy reviewing the first ever Pinecone Surge S1 SoC in Mi 5c, another visitor from the Redmi series dropped in our mailbox and look who we got here! Redmi 4X! First it was Redmi 4, then Redmi 4 Prime then Redmi 4A, now its the X series. Fresh from the success upon releasing the Redmi Note 4X and the Redmi Note 4 SD in India, Xiaomi wasted no time and capitalized on the momentum to drop in the Redmi 4X, now its about time for us to take a look at what this little fella can offer shall we?

      Video Unboxing!

      Whats in the Box:

Nothing really new about the box and packaging of the contents for Redmi 4X, but one noticeable change is the charger color. It used to be a black charger with output of 5V and 2A, not its a white charger with grey border lines, but the charging capacity is also the same. Nothing has really changed.

Was it an Upgrade from Redmi 4?

Now we have notice the side by side specs of the Redmi 4X is almost exactly the same / copied from that of the Redmi 4, in short, almost the same body but different placement of camera location. The Redmi 4X is now currently comprised of plastic material as opposed to the metal back of Redmi 4 which spells the biggest difference based on first impression. We can clearly state that the Redmi 4X is a upgraded Redmi 4A in terms of hardware but we still prefer the metal back of the Redmi 4.

The top of the phone shows the 3.5mm audio jack as well as the IR blaster and the noise-cancellation mic. While at the bottom we can find the Micro USB port, we were surprised with the placement of the loudspeaker which is already located at the bottom of the phone, no longer at the back of the phone which hinders us from hearing the call notification alert when the back is lying flat on the table. Please take note that the loudspeaker is on the left holes and the mic is on the right holes on the bottom of the phone. The right sports the Volume Rocker and powerbutton while the left sports the sim card trey.

The Redmi 4X sports cornered edges design and but has gentle sloping sides to make sure its easy to grip on the hands.

The phone is pretty easy to carry, being the 5 inches smartphone that it is, this is the perfect size for one handed use. The HD display is good enough as a daily driver and it is equipped with the sunlight display technology which is a big advantage when using the phone under the beam of the sun. The capacitive button does not lit up like the Mi Series, but it is pretty responsive to every touch we did on the buttons. No signs of lag from our side.

Snapdragon 435, Just Enough for daily basic task

The Redmi 4X is mainly powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 SoC, this SoC supports fast LTE connection in CAT 7. Although slower in processing compared to the one in Redmi Note 4X the SoC 435 sill preforms well for daily task like calls, text, messengers, social apps and online games. Its performance for multitasking is also average considering it has 8-cores ready to help you push those tasks to the finish line. While playing some heavy games like NBA2k17, we can simply feel the lag on this unit as it lacks the effort to provide more power for us to finish the game of basketball, you can play it but expect some lags during gameplay. When playing online games we have no problem with it. AnTuTu gave it a 42,415 points which is pretty near to our Redmi 4 performance of 42,619 points. For more detailed infomation on the processor, check this out: qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/435

      Audio and Video:

We have tested the audio for the loudspeaker, it is pretty normal for a small phone of its size, nothing special about it, but sound is weaker compared to our Mi MIX and Mi 5s. We also tested watching 720p video via youtube and its pretty clear and decent. Good job on that category for Redmi 4X. As for audio using Pistons In Ear Pro, its also sound good as we played some rock and pop songs.

      Camera:

Most Redmi Series dont have camera that are as great as the ones that are in the Mi flagship series. But some Redmi series camera does a pretty job for simple snap and go function and some doesnt. Now this one in Redmi 4X we feel the camera is not really that good as the one present in Redmi 4, some of our snaps are not so sharp but we did try to focus well using the Redmi 4X camera. We made some casual point and shoot on daily object that we can while using it as a daily driver and here are the unedited photos from our gallery.

      Battery Analysis:

Xiaomi advertised this on their website

      Call
      Video playback
      Game
      4G standby
      Audio playback
      Read
      Navigation
      36 hours
      15 hours
      13 hours
      18 days
      87 hours
      26 hours
      15 hours

One of the main focus that we have notice from this unit, othert than its pocket friendly price, is its battery. We were able to let PC Mark do the battery stress test for us and after the long endurance test, it yielded an above average of 10 hours 34 minutes. Quite similar to the result yielded by our Redmi 4 which has a 10 hours 37 mins record. The battery is not bad but we wish it can yield more juice for us as we believe the processor consumes less power, therefore more battery life should be evident. While charging, we were able to get a constant average charging ampere of 2.11A.

Mitch002 Verdict: Battery and Camera could have been Better

With Xiaomi releasing so much units recently, is this really a good upgrade from the Redmi 4? Honestly, we would stick with the Redmi 4 in terms of price because they have the same price and your better off with the brushed aluminum back case of Redmi 4 as opposed to the plastic back of Redmi 4X. The camera on the Redmi 4 was also better as it was able to take sharper photos then the Redmi 4X, other than upgrades in the processor's power and more features, there is not really much upgrade to the Redmi 4X if you come from Redmi 4. But if your in for the latest Redmi series, yeah this is a good phone to have, but my suggestion is that if you can grab the Redmi 4, that unit is worth your money more.

The 2GB Ram 16GB Storage is available for 699 RMB while the 3GB Ram and 32GB Storage is available for 899RMB on Xiaomi China Website.
