      Mi4s: A Perfectly Evolved Mi4

      by mitch002

Now that Feb 24 and MWC Congress is now finally in the books, the hype is now on! We were surprised a bit with the release of the Mi4s as Xiaomi keeps persistently trying to revive their failed heir to Mi3 in so many various ways after the launch of Mi4. We had the Mi4i, Mi4c and now Mi4s, the company made it clear that they want Mi4 to be remembered also in the hearts of Xiaomi fans since Mi4 didnt really create that much hype after the widely popular success of Mi3. Since then they have shifted from aluminum to plastic and now back to aluminum again. This is already the 4th evolution of the Mi4, we hope its the last and unlike the popular Pokemon Eevee which can still evolve into more different species.

Now all eyes are on Mi5, lets take a side step and give our initial impression on its co-debut device, the Mi4s shall we.

      First Impression

At first glance upon opening the box, we feel that the Mi4s has taken a big leap forward in terms of design from its predecessor the Mi4. The round edges and the glass-like finished back make it so elegant seems its build more for a party rather than a daily driver.

We have the IR-Blaster,the 3.5mm Jack and the noise cancellation mic on top of the unit, on the rightside it sports the volume rocker as well as the power button.

As we take a lookat the left side there is the sim tray, sim 1 is a micro sim while sim 2 caneither be a nano sim card or a 128gb micro SD card to expand the storage.

As we take a look at the bottom ofthe unit, we have the USB-C charging port as well as the loudspeakers as well.

Inthe front you have the 5.0” display as well as the 5-MP front camera goingtogether with the 3 capacitive touch buttons. As you flip the phone over, youwill see the fingerprint sensor below the 12-MP camera with the dual LED flashbulb.

The display of the Mi4s is quite good under the sun or in dark places because it sports a HD display, but we don’t like the glass at the back being a fingerprint magnet. The HD display is similar to that of the Mi5 but based on our observation when it was placed side by side with the same photo, the Mi5 display a brighter image thanks to more backlit LED (16 LEDs to be exact).

Snapdragon 808 is not as powerful as 650

Since this is a comeback / evolved unit and you are charging consumers for 1,699 RMB (12,300 Pesos) for this unit, you should at least outperform the Redmi Note 3 Pro (1,199 RMB 8,700 Pesos) equipped with the Snapdragon 650. We were able to rate the Redmi Note 3 Pro with an AnTuTu score of 75,597 points, we managed to notch just 45,249 points in AnTuTu for the Mi4s.

Even though the Mi4s didn’t impress us in AnTuTu, nevertheless it did not clamp down in performance, we didn’t notice lag in the unit when multitasking, but when we played NBA2k16 there was stuttering moments that cannot be avoided because of the underpowered SoC that’s present in this review unit. But as far as overall performance for a daily driver goes, we consider the unit as not bad but still not up to the expectation we had after reviewing the Redmi Note 3 Pro.

This unit is running MIUI 7 under Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, but it might get Marshmallow support in the future according to Xiaomi. We loved the way the fingerprint scanner was placed below the camera, it is pretty much accessible to unlock the unit with the touch of the index finger holding the phone, it took us just roughly 25 seconds to setup the fingerprint.

As we put the unit under temperature test, on standby mode it was able to give a rating of 30.5 Celsius, and it gave us a reading of 33.5 Celsius when it’s under normal usage like surfing and chatting via Wi-Fi. But when we put the pedal to the metal, we got a temperature of 38 Celsius which is pretty warm for a non-highpowered SoC.

      Camera performance

The 13MP camera is by far up to our standard for a Mi Series smartphone. The Mi Series always put up a good camera while the Redmi Series concentrates more on the budget side. The camera performed pretty well under well lit object and under the sunlight, it also performs well under low light areas as well. The only difference is that the Mi5 focuses faster than the Mi4s as we went on adventure with the Mi4s together with the Mi5 since they were released together on March 1. We also tried recording Full HD videos and it was good enough to say that the camera is worthy of the price you are paying for. The front camera managed to take pretty good pictures as well.

Check out our video as we put Mi4s and Mi5 side by side as it records on Full HD

      Battery could have been better

Since the SoC is not as power hungry as the Snapdragon 820 present in Mi5, we were expecting a better battery life for this unit, but PC Mark Test told us it can endure 8 hours 14 mins of battery time meaning it can last you a day at work, but it could have been better. But if you can manage it properly, it can manage you thru the day without charging your phone. This unit supports Quickcharge 2.0 and we recorded a 1.31 Ampere input using its original provided cable and adapter.

      Other Test Results

      Bootloader

Yes we know thats the next thing on your mindafter Google has started the initiative of locking android device for the roadto Marshmallow. And yes Mi4s is a bootloader locked device therefore you needto apply for an unlock code using your Mi Account at en.miui.com/unlock and theAdmins / Moderators will try their best to help you unlock it for you to rootthe device. Remember that you need to be on China Stable Rom before you canunlock your device.

      Sounds, Wifi, GPS and More

Now lets talk a little about the other small details that normally we dont touch on, Mobile data we have no problem with it (normally on 4G unless the signal reception is poor). GPS works fine together with mobile data on while using Google Maps during the holiday travel. WiFi reception is pretty fair, tho sometime we get 1 bar more on Mi5 on the same spot for the same router. Sounds are good, we we able to rock some Maroon 5 song during a road trip with loudspeakers on, and the Mi4s has two speakers down there, one on the left and one on the right of the USB C charging port.

Verdict: Powerful comeback, Not impressive enough

Now on its 4th evolution, the Mi4s did manage to steal some scene away from Mi5 with its gorgeous looks on the exterior, but when we were able to play with it for a week, we weren’t really impress with what is inside the unit. Being priced at 1699 RMB is not really something you will pickup if you are rugged and on the go. This phone better suits the ladies, it goes well with their fashion statement. We better recommend the Redmi Note 3 Pro if you are on the go, or if you want a more powerful phone that is not too harsh on the pocket, take Mi5 32GB at 1999 RMB. Take note that all prices are exclusive of taxes and shipping charges.
